MYCONTENTLAB is our product. We include it in this list with its real trial and add-on terms, and we checked every other vendor's own pricing or product page in October 2026. We do not take affiliate fees from any tool named here.
The genuinely free social listening tools in 2026 are Google Alerts and Talkwalker Alerts (web, news, blogs, forums, and X for Talkwalker), F5Bot for Reddit and Hacker News, Talkwalker Free Social Search (7 days of history), Social Searcher, native search on X and Reddit, TikTok's Creative Center trends and Meta Business Suite for your own pages. None of them give you reliable sentiment, Instagram or TikTok mention tracking, or client-ready reports. Brand24 (14 days), Hootsuite (14 days), Sprout Social (30 days), Awario and MYCONTENTLAB (14 days) offer free trials, not free plans, and Mention no longer lists a free plan at all. Run the free stack for one month, and pay once a client needs alerts within the hour, sentiment, competitor share of voice or monthly reporting.
Key Takeaways
- Separate permanently free tools from free trials: in October 2026, Brand24, Mention, Awario, Hootsuite and Sprout Social do not list a free plan on their pricing pages.
- A free stack of Google Alerts, Talkwalker Alerts, F5Bot and manual X and Reddit searches covers web, news, forums, X and Reddit mentions for one brand at no cost.
- Free tools rarely cover Instagram or TikTok mentions, give little or no history, and offer no sentiment analysis you can put in front of a client.
- Write your Boolean query once, then reuse it across every free tool so results stay consistent and comparable.
- Pay when the time spent checking free tools costs more than a subscription, or when a client expects alerts, sentiment and monthly reporting.

The honest answer to “what is the best free social listening tool” is that there isn’t one. There is a free stack. Google Alerts, Talkwalker Alerts, F5Bot and the native search on X and Reddit will catch most public mentions of a small brand at no cost. What they will not do is tell you how people feel, cover Instagram and TikTok properly, or produce something you can hand a client.
I run a UK agency as well as building MYCONTENTLAB, and free tools are where almost every agency starts. This guide sets out which tools are genuinely free in October 2026, which are only free trials, exactly what each free version includes, and the point where paying makes sense.
Every vendor detail below was checked on the vendor’s own page in October 2026. Where a tool no longer has a free plan, I say so.
Free tools vs free trials: the quick answer
A free tool stays free with limits. A free trial gives you the full product for 7 to 30 days and then asks for money. Most “free social listening tool” lists mix the two, which is how you end up building a client process on something that expires in a fortnight.

Genuinely free social listening tools
These are the free tools I would actually use for a client today. Each one does one job well, so the trick is combining them.
Google Alerts: the free baseline for news and the web
Google Alerts is the right first step for any brand, and it takes two minutes. You enter a search term, choose how often you want results (as it happens, at most once a day, or at most once a week), pick sources, language and region, and choose email or an RSS feed. Google’s own help page explains how to create an alert.
What the free version includes: unlimited alerts, web pages, news sites and blogs that Google has indexed, region filtering (set it to United Kingdom for UK clients), and RSS delivery you can pipe into Slack.
Where it runs out: it does not monitor social media platforms in any meaningful way, results arrive late compared with paid tools, and there is no sentiment or history. Treat it as web and news coverage only.
Talkwalker Alerts: Google Alerts with forums and X
Talkwalker Alerts is the better free alert tool if you only pick one. It covers news, blogs, discussion forums and X, and delivers by email, RSS or Slack, with an “as it happens” option. You can sign up on the Talkwalker Alerts page.
Where it runs out: no Reddit, no Instagram or TikTok, no dashboard and no sentiment. It is still the best free source of forum and X mentions I have found.
Talkwalker Free Social Search: a quick 7-day snapshot
Talkwalker’s free social search gives you a snapshot of social posts and web mentions for a brand, hashtag or competitor over the last 7 days. It is handy before a pitch to see what people say about a prospect.
Where it runs out: 7 days of history only, and no ongoing alerts. It is a spot check, not a monitoring system.
F5Bot: the best free tool for Reddit
F5Bot is the best free social listening tool for Reddit, and it is still live in October 2026. It emails you when your keywords appear on Reddit, Hacker News or Lobsters, and it is free to use with no credit card. You can also send results to Slack or Discord via webhooks, or use RSS and JSON feeds. Sign up at f5bot.com.
What it does not do: filter by sentiment, group threads or show anything older than when you set it up. Paid F5Bot tiers set clear keyword limits (20 on Silver, 200 on Gold); the site does not state a limit for the free tier, so keep your free keyword list tight.
Social Searcher: free search across public posts
Social Searcher is a free social media search engine for public posts and profiles across major networks. It is useful for a quick look at public mentions without logging into each platform. Its homepage did not set out free limits or alert options when we checked, so treat it as a manual search tool rather than a monitoring system.
Native search on X and Reddit
X advanced search and Reddit search are free, have deep archives, and are where most UK brand complaints actually start. On X, advanced search lets you filter by exact phrase, excluded words, language, date range and minimum engagement. On Reddit, search the brand name, sort by New, and check the subreddits that matter for the client’s niche.
Where they run out: nothing is automated. Someone has to run the searches each week, which is fine for one brand and painful for ten.
TikTok Creative Center: trends, not mentions
TikTok’s Creative Center (now part of TikTok One) shows trending hashtags and videos by country, including the United Kingdom, over the last 7, 30 or 90 days. It is excellent for content strategy and spotting what is rising in a client’s category.
Be clear about what it is not: it does not track mentions of your brand. Free tools barely cover TikTok mentions at all, which is one of the main reasons agencies pay.
Meta Business Suite: your own pages only
Meta Business Suite is free and shows comments, messages and mentions on the Facebook and Instagram accounts you manage, in one inbox. It is essential for community management, but it is not social listening. It will not show you a conversation about your client on someone else’s post or page.
Freemium tools and free trials (checked October 2026)
Every paid platform below offers a trial, and none of them list a permanently free plan on their pricing page today. That matters if you were hoping to run a client on a free tier.
Brand24
Brand24 offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card required, and no free plan. After the trial, the Individual plan is $249 a month billed monthly ($199 a month billed annually) for 3 keywords and 2,000 mentions a month, and every plan includes sentiment analysis (Brand24 pricing). Brand24 is a strong choice if sentiment and media monitoring matter more to you than long-term free use, and its trial is the best way to see what paid listening adds.
Mention
Mention no longer lists a free plan or self-serve tiers. Its pricing page now shows a single Company plan with a demo request, covering Facebook, Instagram, X, Reddit, TikTok, Pinterest, YouTube, news, blogs, forums and 75+ review sites, with historical data sold as a paid add-on (Mention pricing). Mention is now closely tied to Agorapulse, which handles publishing and responding. If an older article tells you Mention is free, it is out of date.
Awario
Awario gives free trial access to its Starter plan without a credit card, and does not list a free plan. Paid plans start from $29 a month for Starter, which includes 3 topics, 30,000 new mentions a month and 5,000 stored mentions per topic (Awario pricing). It is one of the cheapest paid routes if you outgrow free tools on a tight budget.
Hootsuite
Hootsuite offers a 14-day trial and no free plan on its plans page. Standard ($99 per user a month) includes basic social listening, Professional ($199) lets you search up to 30 days of conversations, and 13 months of history, alerts and review monitoring sit in Enterprise (Hootsuite plans). Good if you already publish through Hootsuite; expensive if listening is all you want.
Sprout Social
Sprout Social has a 30-day free trial and no free plan. Listening is sold as an add-on from the Standard plan ($199 per seat a month) upwards, and the add-on price is not shown on the pricing page (Sprout Social pricing). It is a solid enterprise option, but the trial will not tell you the full cost of listening without a sales conversation.
MYCONTENTLAB
MYCONTENTLAB has a 14-day free trial on every plan, with no credit card required. The trial gives you access to all core modules, including Social Listening, and up to 3 test client workspaces. It is a trial, not a free plan, so it belongs in this section rather than the free one.
What social listening covers in MYCONTENTLAB, according to our social listening docs:
- Sources: X, Reddit, TikTok comments, YouTube comments, public LinkedIn discussions, blogs, industry news, forums and review sites such as Trustpilot, G2 and Google Reviews.
- Mentions stream: each mention shows the author, a snippet, a sentiment badge (positive, neutral or negative) and estimated reach.
- Alerts: a negative surge alert when negative sentiment passes 15% of daily volume, and an influencer alert when an account with more than 50k followers mentions a tracked keyword.
- Share of voice: compare a client’s mention volume with up to 5 competitors.
- AI reply drafts: draft a response to a mention in a chosen tone, then edit before you send it.
Every plan includes a monthly social mentions allowance (1,000 on Creator, 10,000 on Freelancer, 50,000 on Agency). For continuous, real-time monitoring of a client, there is a per-client Social listening and brand monitoring add-on, listed at £49 per client per month on our pricing page. On a paid plan, each client workspace gets one free historical scan before you switch the add-on on, which works well as a pitch: show a prospect what people are saying before they sign. The Reddit agent also finds recommendation requests and competitor frustrations in niche subreddits and drafts replies for you to review.
Where MYCONTENTLAB is not the best fit: if you need deep historical archives, broadcast or print media, or a single in-house brand with no clients, a dedicated media monitoring platform such as Brand24 may suit you better. MYCONTENTLAB is built for agencies that want listening next to client reporting, content ideas and white-label delivery in one workspace. See the full feature set on the social listening page.
Social listening vs social monitoring: a short explainer
Social media monitoring is finding and responding to individual mentions. Social listening is analysing many mentions over time to understand what is changing and why. You need both, and free tools mostly give you the first.
| Social media monitoring | Social listening | |
|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | “Who mentioned us today?” | “What do people think, and is it changing?” |
| Typical action | Reply, escalate, thank | Change messaging, brief content, report to the client |
| Time frame | Now | Weeks and months |
| What free tools manage | Most of it | Very little |
Here is a typical example. Monitoring catches a single complaint about delivery times on X and someone replies. Listening, over six weeks, shows the same complaint across Reddit and Trustpilot, and that pattern becomes a change to the FAQ page and the ad copy. We will cover the difference in more depth in a dedicated post.
A free social listening setup an agency can run this week
You can set up free monitoring for a client in about an hour. Write one query, reuse it everywhere, and review results on a fixed day each week.
Step 1: write one Boolean query per client
Boolean operators let you include variations and exclude noise. Most free tools support some version of quotes, OR and minus. Write the master query once in a shared doc.
"Acme Coffee" OR "AcmeCoffee" OR "@acmecoffee" OR "acmecoffee.co.uk"
Exclude noise when the brand name is a common word:
"Acme" (coffee OR roastery OR beans) -"Acme Corporation" -jobs -hiring
Track a competitor and a category for share of voice and content ideas:
("Rival Roasters" OR "rivalroasters") (price OR expensive OR delivery OR refund)
"coffee subscription" (recommend OR "any good" OR alternative) UK
On X advanced search, add lang:en and -filter:retweets to cut duplicates. On Reddit, wrap the brand in quotes and sort by New.
Step 2: set up the free alerts
- Google Alerts: one alert per brand query, region United Kingdom, “as it happens”, delivered to RSS.
- Talkwalker Alerts: the same queries, delivered to email or Slack.
- F5Bot: the brand name, the website domain and the top competitor, delivered to a Slack channel via webhook.
Step 3: run a weekly manual check
Block 30 minutes each Monday per client. Check X advanced search for the last 7 days, Reddit search sorted by New, Talkwalker Free Social Search for a 7-day snapshot, and TikTok Creative Center for category trends. Check Meta Business Suite daily for your own pages.
Step 4: log what matters
Keep a simple sheet: date, source, link, sentiment (your judgement), topic and action taken. After four weeks you have a basic listening report: volume by source, recurring themes and the actions they drove. That sheet is exactly what you will want to automate later.
When free runs out: when to pay
Free tools stop being free when your time costs more than a subscription. For most agencies that happens at around three clients, or the first time a client asks “why didn’t we know about this sooner?”
Pay for a social listening tool when any of these are true:
- You need alerts within the hour. Free alerts are batched or delayed; a reputation issue on X can grow in an afternoon.
- You need Instagram or TikTok mention tracking. No free tool in this list does it properly.
- The client wants sentiment. Your own judgement in a spreadsheet is fine for a few mentions a week, not for hundreds.
- You need history beyond 7 days. Comparing this quarter with last quarter needs stored data.
- You report on competitor share of voice. Free tools cannot compare brands side by side.
- You manage more than three brands. Manual weekly checks across ten clients is a part-time job.
Before you buy, take a free trial with your real Boolean queries, not the vendor’s sample data, and compare results against your free stack for the same week. If the paid tool does not find meaningfully more relevant mentions, stay free for now. For a wider view of the software stack around listening, see our guide to marketing agency tools, and for tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT and Perplexity alongside social, read our AI visibility and social listening guide.
The bottom line
Start free. Google Alerts and Talkwalker Alerts for the web, news and X, F5Bot for Reddit, and a weekly manual check of X, Reddit and TikTok trends will cover one or two brands well at no cost. Use the trials of Brand24, Awario, Hootsuite, Sprout Social or MYCONTENTLAB when a client needs sentiment, alerts that arrive in time, competitor benchmarking or a report you would be proud to send. If you want listening, reporting and content ideas for every client in one place, start a 14-day MYCONTENTLAB trial with your own queries and judge it on real results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a completely free social listening tool?
Yes, but each covers only part of the picture. Google Alerts and Talkwalker Alerts are free for web, news, blogs and forums (Talkwalker adds X). F5Bot is free for Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters. Talkwalker Free Social Search shows the last 7 days of social mentions. None of them track Instagram or TikTok mentions properly, and none give dependable sentiment analysis, so most teams combine several.
What is the best free social listening tool for Reddit?
F5Bot. It is free with no credit card, monitors Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters for your keywords, and sends results by email, Slack or Discord webhooks, RSS or JSON. Pair it with Reddit's own search, sorted by New, for a weekly manual check.
How much do social listening tools cost?
Prices checked in October 2026 on vendor pages: Brand24 starts at $249 a month billed monthly (Individual plan, 3 keywords, 2,000 mentions), Hootsuite Standard is $99 per user a month, Sprout Social sells listening as an add-on from its Standard plan, Awario starts from $29 a month, and Mention now quotes its Company plan on request. MYCONTENTLAB includes a monthly mentions allowance in every plan from £47 a month, and its social listening add-on is priced per client.
What is the difference between social listening and social media monitoring?
Social media monitoring finds and responds to individual mentions of a brand. Social listening analyses many mentions over time to find patterns, such as sentiment shifts, recurring complaints or competitor share of voice, and turns them into decisions. Monitoring is reactive; listening informs strategy.
Can ChatGPT do social listening for free?
Not on its own. ChatGPT can summarise mentions you paste in, but it does not continuously collect posts from X, Reddit, TikTok or Instagram for you. Use free tools to collect mentions, then use an AI assistant to summarise themes if you want a quick read.
When should a small team upgrade to a paid social listening tool?
Upgrade when you spend more than an hour or two a week per brand checking free tools, when a client needs alerts within the hour, or when you need sentiment, history beyond a week and competitor comparison in a monthly report.
