YouTube integration guide

Connect YouTube Channels to MyContentLab to monitor long-form video performance, YouTube Shorts velocity, subscriber growth, and audience watch time.

Overview and key benefits

YouTube is the benchmark for long-form video authority and rapid vertical Shorts discovery. Integrating YouTube allows you to:

  • Compare long-form vs Shorts: Filter performance specifically by standard widescreen video versus vertical Shorts.
  • Track audience watch time: Ingest total watch hours, average view duration (AVD), and percentage viewed.
  • Feed Creative Analysis: Connect top YouTube videos directly into our AI video retention auditor.
  • Unified video benchmarking: Benchmark YouTube video retention against TikTok and Instagram Reels.

Prerequisites

Before connecting YouTube:

  1. You have a MyContentLab account with client workspace permissions (Owner, Manager, or Member).
  2. The Google Account used for connection has Owner, Manager, or Viewer access on the target YouTube Channel or Brand Account.

What data gets synchronized

Synchronization runs automatically every 2 to 4 hours:

  • Subscribers: Total subscriber count and net new subscribers gained or lost.
  • Views and traffic: Total video views, estimated reach, and unique viewers.
  • Watch time: Total watch time in hours and average view duration (minutes and seconds).
  • Engagement: Likes, comments, shares, and playlist additions.
  • Shorts distribution: Specific engagement and retention rates for vertical YouTube Shorts.

Step-by-step connection walkthrough

  1. In the client workspace, open Connections.
  2. Click Connect on the YouTube card.
  3. Sign in with the Google Account that manages the YouTube channel.
  4. If managing multiple channels or Google Brand Accounts, select the target YouTube Channel.
  5. Review the requested read-only scopes:

  6. Click Allow. The status indicator switches to Connected (Green).

Troubleshooting and FAQs

How long does it take for new YouTube video views to appear?

The YouTube Analytics API has an inherent latency of 24 to 48 hours for finalized revenue and demographic data, but raw view counts and engagement numbers update within 2 to 4 hours.
